different-sized cages

“different-sized cages” reflects our capacity as humans to not only inhabit, but to truly fill out any space we might find ourselves in, no matter the quality or configuration. Musically, this means being able to express both my and the group’s aesthetic fully, allowing the practical limitation of the instrumentation/style/venue to function not as a hindrance, but as a creative springboard.

Downbeat Article

In the January issue of Downbeat magazine, John was featured in the "Woodshed" educational section of the issue.  The piece reduces and analyzes a big band arrangement from trombonist John Fedchock’s newest release, Like It Is (Mama Records, 2015).  Lake breaks down the chart on “You And The Night And The Music” into its primary themes, and discusses their development through the opening chorus.
The article is available now in the online edition, and will be available in print in a few weeks.
